Zara to Launch Secondhand Clothing in October. Zara, the global fashion retailer, announced that it will launch a secondhand clothing service by October 2024, expanding its commitment to sustainability. This new initiative, called “Zara Pre-Owned,” will allow customers to buy and sell used Zara items through an online platform and select stores. The program aims to reduce textile waste, promote circular fashion, and give clothes a longer life cycle.

The service will initially launch in several key markets, including Spain, the U.K., and the U.S. Customers will be able to access the platform through Zara’s app, where they can list their gently-used Zara clothing and accessories for resale. The platform will also offer options for customers to donate or recycle their garments.

Zara Pre-Owned will also feature a repair service, allowing customers to fix items such as broken zippers, torn seams, or missing buttons. The goal is to encourage shoppers to extend the lifespan of their garments, aligning with the growing consumer trend towards sustainability and mindful fashion choices.

This move comes as part of Zara’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes using more sustainable fabrics and reducing its environmental footprint. Amancio Ortega, the founder of Inditex, Zara’s parent company, has stated that the brand aims to make 50% of its clothing from sustainable materials by 2025.

Moreover, as competition in the fast fashion industry increases, many retailers are turning to secondhand options to meet the growing demand for sustainable fashion. Zara’s new service mirrors efforts by other major brands such as H&M and Patagonia, which have launched similar initiatives in recent years.

By offering this service, Zara is looking to address both environmental concerns and shifting consumer preferences. The company hopes that this new platform will create a more sustainable fashion ecosystem while maintaining its position as a leader in the retail industry.
