Following Microsoft’s new rules, the tokens introduced by the NFT Worlds will no longer be useable in Minecraft’s API.
Will there be no NFTs in Minecraft? In the battle of who owns the digital ownership, both Microsoft’s Mojang and the NFT players are claiming to put their players ahead of their gains.
Mojang, in an announcement, made it clear that they won’t be pairing up with blockchain and NFTs technology for its game, Minecraft. The news was not encouraging for the NFT Worlds that has spent a fortune and months building up an entire economy of cryptocurrency capitalizing on a collection of random seeds required to make Minecraft maps.
After the announcement came out, the team behind the NFT Worlds released a statement that stated that the company will now create a game of its own, that will be created on the core mechanic of Minecraft but the game will be entirely untied from the policy enforcement that both Mojang and Microsoft command over Minecraft. The company also stated that its new game will be built from the scratch and will be very much like the game style of Minecraft to give the players a similar feel. The company promised to upgrade all the shortcomings and technological missouts of the older game that required an update for years.
Announcement on Minecraft from the NFT Worlds
NFT Worlds assured its users to be calm and wait for the new game as the company plans to upgrade the existing Minecraft framework. They further assured that their game will be always free for its players and that the users won’t be needing a credit card to purchase any content or additional features. NFT Worlds introduced the concept that for any purchase the players will be needing only its tokens, whose value will plummet over 60% in a week. This announcement was followed by the one made by Mojang.
For the time, the players can still use an NFT World-issued random seed for playing Minecraft or even host a session of multiplayer on the existing map, after a spokesperson from Microsoft confirmed to Vice. But it does not offer much use since the issued NFT will have no exclusive rights to the map that would not be more than “World 1-1” on paper providing ownership of Super Mario Bros level.
Following Microsoft’s new rules, the tokens introduced by the NFT Worlds will no longer be useable in Minecraft’s API clarifying that the players will no longer be able to make any in-game payments using the cryptocurrency, denominated as NFT World’s $WRLD tokens or take advantage of any other additional features by using NFT Worlds’ API.
Should you continue building the content of NFT Worlds?
On the other hand, the team of NFT Worlds announced that it will be making backward compatibility with the existing Minecraft server its priority, including the development plugins and its practices, in its upcoming similar game. This signaled the creators of the game should continue building the content of NFT Worlds above the Minecraft version. The team says they will be confident that this new system will work on the rebranded game that it will now create.
Thanks to Mojang’s new EULA, all further NFT Worlds-related content development in Minecraft cannot include any blockchain-based functions and features, NFT, or any related game currency, at least not for the time. These were the core features NFT Worlds has valued as new add-ons, though this is still ambiguous as to what the developers of NFT Worlds will occupy themselves with until their Minecraft alternative is ready to roll out in the market.
NFT Worlds has very much taken on the phrase, you can’t fire us, because we quit. It is categorizing this whole new split as a “web2 vs web3” battle between two completely different versions of the game that will be available to the players in the future. This marks the start of a revolutionary struggle over who will own the digital assets. NFT Worlds is posing itself to be the protector of the innovating spirit as the independent creators while creating an image of Microsoft as a profit-obsessed mammoth that is only acting in its self-interest with no regard to promoting the innovation and players’ experience.
Challenge of Monopoly
Mojang, on the other side, maintained the stance that projects similar to NFT Worlds capitalize on creating a monopoly over digital ownership basing it on the principles of scarcity and exclusion. They believe that it doesn’t align with the values and vision of Minecraft that focuses on inclusion and bringing the players together. The company emphasized that by excluding the proposition of NFT Worlds, it has safeguarded the value of Minecraft to remain a strong community where anyone can have the access to similar content.
While NFT Worlds is claiming to bring innovation, evolution, and open gameplay that will be player owned and operated economy, we believe the devil is in the details. For instance, with Minecraft, just about anyone can access the maps just with a 32-bit integer seed, even if someone claims ownership of it based on the NFT Worlds token.
But for this very moment, the state of NFT Worlds’ upcoming Minecraft clone, is not much clear that will it work in a way similar to Minecraft or will the players will have to pay the company or the owner of the NFT for accessing a prime virtual piece of land that will be owned by another owner. This system might favor for the newcomers to own a valuable and rare world seed but it might not be as attractive to the players that follow, especially to the existing players of Minecraft who are used to having open access to interesting seeds.
Challenge for the NFT Worlds
NFT Worlds also made a suggestion earlier that it is planning to let the players not only create but also sell their self-created seeds, in-game skins, characters, and avatars. The basic theory is to create a monetary incentive for encouraging creativity and thus, sharing it with others. Minecraft already has a growing ecosystem of player-made content and skins that can be downloaded simply as a PNG file with no crypto exchange required.

The current NFT Worlds’ move is being viewed as a large dosage of “sour grapes” thinking with an inevitable sour forced split. For about a year, it has tried to build up content that was based on the crypto empire capitalizing on a very popular game. That has over 141 million active players, in late 2021. Only by saying that the original game is throwing its work out making it confident to be able to build its version of the said game, including building the same game dynamics, graphics, and performance level with all new improvements that will lead the new game to be much more ownable, accessible with a much premium playing experience.
