A Dutch Sailor resolves a world mystery of 375 Years with his discovery.

There are eight continents and not seven in the world. The world is full of mysteries but the exceptional one has recently got resolved. And we cannot resist saying thank you to Abel Tasman. A man with sharp six senses predicted that the world has eight continents and not seven. Keep in mind that back in years, this sounded not less than a joke to many.

But the experienced Dutch sailor was poised with his prediction and didn’t snake through after making a prediction. In fact, he decided to turn his prediction into reality and now he has surprised the world with his discovery of the eighth continent. Yeah, you heard it right! For ages, Europe has been a mysterious continent for explorers of the world. Tasman has proved it as the most ‘mysterious’ place by spotting out the eighth continent in the Southern hemisphere.

Where is the new continent located?

The oh-so-surprising story revolves around the month of August. It is when the Dutch sailor planned to start his journey from Jakarta, Indonesia. The sailor began his voyage with two small boats and planned to move towards the west. However, then headed towards the south, and then explored the east. Although, the last stop of Tasman was the South Island of New Zealand. This marked the end of Tasman’s journey and he then named it a ‘fortunate move’.

Before jumping into the bandwagon of ‘yes or no’ the sailor conducted verbal communication sessions with the locals. These were specifically with the ones who have been there for ages. Though the first trial of the communication session was not satisfying enough. The sailor had to move with the second attempt. Although during these trials, an unfortunate incident happened where they splashed out on a canoe which consequent in the incline of small that was helping in conveying the message in between the Dutch boats. This resulted in the sudden death of four Europeans.

How was it discovered?

So, here we can say that discovering this hidden wonder of the world was not an easy-to-go journey for Dutch sailors. The emergence of eight continents i.e., Zealandia gives nostalgic flashbacks to the time when scientists discovered New Zealand.

However, it is said that after a gap of a decade, when Tasman successfully managed to discover New Zealand, back in the year 1642, one of the expert map makers named, James Cook was instructed to take on the expedition to the southern hemisphere. Particularly the map maker was directed to look at the crossings of the Venus. They occur in between the Earth and sun, concerning estimating the range distance of the sun.

When the map maker was all set to start his adventurous journey, he was handed a sealed envelope. There were instructions to open this envelope only when succeed to achieve the first task. Though, some of the reports revealed that the map-maker was too curious to know the top-secret ‘second’ mission. He didn’t wait to reach New Zealand and opened the envelope during the journey.

Reports also claimed that the sealed mission of the map-maker was to discover the eighth for the world. This marks the biggest question mark on the discovery and even on the prediction of Tasman. Because, the historical records show that the first-ever clue and prediction of the existence of the eighth continent was given by the Scottish ecologist named, James Hector.

Agreement of Geologists

Regardless of this early prediction, the discovery of the Zealandia remained a mystery. And only a few geologists or naturalists tried searching on this, back in the 1960s. Though one of the geologists conducted a study in 2017 and recorded his statement with a complaint that ‘this field is quite complex and hence, most of the times it takes decades to prove the predictions. Meanwhile, this also happens because most of the geologists quit in between the research’. -Stated Nick Mortimer, a geologist.

Fast forward, in the era of 1960s, some of the geologists decided to pay heed to the prediction of the eighth continent. The curiosity and efforts of a group of geologists showed a little space with huge elevation where a thick shell and few giant rocks. The detection led to boosting the inquisitiveness of geologists and made them believe that it cannot be just a tiny piece of land, it must be something giant that is still hidden.

Discovery of Zealandia

This shows that discovering or even searching for the existence of the eighth continent is a quite tricky process and it took around hundreds of years to each decade of the geologist to prove the presence of eight continents, that is, Zealandia as a real thing.

If we take a chunk of history at this point, then it would not be forged to say that prediction and little discovery of the eighth continent were already made, centuries ago. Though, according to geographical illustration, the Zealandia is a part of the ancient subcontinent of the Gondwana. Although, the continent has formed a crust that is around 40km deep, as per the estimations. Though, the geologist likely to claim that the formed crust is normally thicker, in comparison to the oceanic crust.

Furthermore, it is predicted and assumed that with time, the crust strained and Zealandia got stretched to the point where its crust ended up being 20km down. Nevertheless, regardless of acquiring a thin and waterlogged crust, geologists are now able to claim (based on research and discovery) that Zealandia is a continent.

Meanwhile, another geologist gave a twisted statement by saying that the discovery of the continent is about to reveal its secret and many ‘big’ secrets can be revealed soon. Though, at this point, it is quite challenging to make any claim as the land is covered with 2km water.

So, the crux of the whole discovery could show that it may take more years to make an accurate claim of the existence of a new continent. Meanwhile, these clues and predictions are enough to make the world excited for the upcoming discovery of geologists.
