It may be the first ever case in recent history where a sitting Prime Minister of the State is called a traitor by its own state.
Pakistani State terms Kashmiri Prime Minister a traitor. This is one of the worst cases as a government supported individual in Pakistan filed an FIR (First Information Report) with police. The applicant is himself one of the known criminals. However, the police acted fast and filed the FIR. An FIR is usually the first step towards prosecuting any individual or entity in common law. This shows the involvement of the government and State of Pakistan in the high profile case.
Pakistan supports the Kashmir cause since its independence. It has been asking for a plebiscite in Indian Occupied Kashmir. However, this move is likely to strain the relationship between State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan.
This is the first time that a Kashmiri political leader is facing such a scenario in country’s history. Earlier, a number of political leaders from different provinces faced similar charges.
The terming of political leaders as traitors is a usual phenomenon in Pakistan. The sister of Pakistan’s founder, Miss Fatima Jinnah was also called a traitor once. However, she became Mother of the Nation after her demise.
Similarly, a number of political leaders from Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan did face charge of treason for their political views. Most importantly, former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto were also termed traitors informally.
Yet, this is the first ever time that a Kashmiri leader, and most importantly current Prime Minister is being termed as a traitor. Let’s see how the Kashmiris see the move.
