Manipur’s Ethnic Conflict Intensifies, Leaving Six Dead. Ethnic violence in India’s northeastern state of Manipur escalated on Thursday, leaving six people dead and several others injured. The violence broke out between two rival communities over long-standing land and political disputes. Tensions that have been simmering for months turned deadly when armed groups attacked villages in several districts.

Local authorities reported that clashes erupted late Thursday night, with both sides engaging in violent confrontations. The police and military forces were dispatched to control the situation, but the violence has continued to spread. “We are trying to restore order, but the conflict is rapidly escalating,” said a senior police official. Curfews were imposed in some regions, and authorities suspended internet services to prevent misinformation and incitement.

The conflict, rooted in disagreements over land ownership and political power, has flared up repeatedly over the years. Recent protests over government policies have fueled these tensions, leading to the latest outbreak of violence. Along with the fatalities, many homes were torched, and hundreds of families fled their villages, fearing further attacks.

Manipur’s chief minister, N. Biren Singh, called for calm and urged the communities to resolve their issues through dialogue. “Violence will not solve this problem,” he said in a statement. “Our government is working to bring peace, and we will take firm action against those inciting hatred.” He also assured that more security forces would be sent to the affected areas to prevent further clashes.

The violence has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with displaced families needing urgent aid. Relief efforts are underway, but ongoing fighting has made it difficult for aid workers to reach the worst-hit areas. Many villagers have sought shelter in makeshift camps, where food, water, and medical supplies remain limited.

Manipur, known for its ethnic diversity, has experienced periodic ethnic conflicts. The state’s complex social landscape often fuels disputes between various communities. National leaders and human rights groups are urging swift intervention to prevent the violence from spreading further, while the state government continues its efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
