In the current world of nation states, we all belong to one country or the other. Our country is defined as a place within a border with its own identity, culture, currency and government. It should be understood that every country is distinct with its own identity. Although, there have been large nation states in the past. The current world is defined on the basis of defined borders as of today.
The world today has different number of countries due to multiple conflicts. For instance, the United Nations has its own list of countries which is considered as a consensus based nation states in different regions. The UN recognizes 197 nation states as independent countries. However, there are a few discrepancies and complexities when considering this list of countries. It must be stated that the total strength of countries in our world is 215. Since, this includes several other smaller or conflict based States which are not yet recognized by the United Nations.
