Buy Now Pay Later Services

The buy now pays later services are currently unregulated in the UK. This service is highly criticized for the way it is being used by low-income groups. It was reported by Panorama in December 2021, that according to an estimate, 15 million adults of all ages in the United Kingdom are actively using this service already. Main players like Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal, and Laybuy are offering BNPL services in the country.

The concerns revolve around the fact that people are relying on it too much. One out of 12 people is using BNPL services to cover their essentials including food and toiletries. This is resulting in another situation when credit cards were introduced to the general public. This is further adding to up to credit load not only on an individual level but state level as well if these services are to come towards regulation or else will force these companies to shut down. Citizen Advice also informed that young people who own credit cards and use these services were using this service twice as much to meet their necessities.

Apple, however, has not yet commented on whether it is planning to bring this service to the UK or the EU.
