The official statement claims that mental health is one of the most neglected fields in Pakistan, despite increases in the number of people suffering from psychological and mental disorders in the country. Given the scarcity of data on mental illnesses in Pakistan, it is hard to provide an exact or accurate estimate of the percentage of our country’s population living with psychological problems. However, it has been estimated that at least 15 million people in Pakistan suffer from some form of mental illness.

Formation of Therapy Works

Moreover, it claims that its purpose of formation was the growing demand for highly qualified professionals to work sensitively and creatively with people, and who would be equipped with a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to serve the people of Pakistan who have no mass emotional health support from established sources.

Further, it believes that there are currently two existing mental health paradigms in Pakistan, conventional psychiatry and clinical psychology. 180 million people are currently provided health cover by less than 500 psychiatrists primarily confined to 5 major cities only. Counselling and therapy within these approaches is limited to pharmacology (medical model) and CBT practice, both are underpaid and overworked.
